Don't overspend on overkill in one area (Asia Minor for example) at the cost of losing the war in a more important one (Macedonia/Southern Italy for example). Spartans are or relatively little use in the campaign, since Armoured Hoplites are more resistant to missile fire, cheaper to train, cheaper to maintain, take less time to train and are more widely available. You can only recruit Spartan Hoplites with the Sparta Hidden Resource and an Army Barracks, which can only be built in a Large City. The only unit i ever had is the Spartan unit you start with as you cant retrain them to get them back to a full unit they dont last very long into the game. I can never recruit any spartans even when i play as Greek
